How Wooden Caskets Are Made
Have you ever wondered how a wooden casket is made? Recently, our staff had the opportunity to tour the facility where all of our wooden caskets are crafted. Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions operates its hardwood casket manufacturing plant in York, Pennsylvania, and this is where every wooden casket they sell throughout the country is produced.

The location began as York Casket Company in the early 1900s. Originally known for building wooden carriages, the company eventually expanded into casket manufacturing. In 2001, Matthews International acquired York Casket Company and has continued the tradition of quality craftsmanship ever since.
Hardwood caskets made at this location include mahogany, walnut, cherry, maple, oak, ash, pecan, pine, and poplar. Each type of wood offers its own unique appearance, character, and finish.
The process begins when lumber arrives from approved lumber suppliers in large pallets. The wood is carefully laid out and dried before being inspected for quality. Once approved, it is cut into the necessary sizes for the lid, sides, and other casket components. The pieces are then sanded, stained, and assembled all within the York facility.

The plant handcrafts more than 300 caskets each day, though some models require significantly more time and detail than others. Depending on the style and materials used, a casket can take anywhere from a few hours to three or four weeks to complete.
Producing this many caskets generates a considerable amount of sawdust, but Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions works hard to minimize waste. All sawdust is collected and recycled, and as much scrap wood as possible is repurposed. Smaller pieces that do not meet the standards required for the casket structure may be used for hardware components or other manufacturing needs.
One of the most impressive parts of the process is that the casket interiors are handcrafted on-site as well. The pillows, interior linings, blankets, and other fabric components are all hand-sewn at the York plant, ensuring attention to detail throughout the entire product.

Before a casket is packaged and shipped, it undergoes a thorough multi-point quality inspection. Each casket is carefully examined from top to bottom, inside and out, to ensure the highest quality product is delivered to funeral homes and the families they serve.
While some may assume that wooden casket manufacturing places a significant strain on the environment, Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions takes several steps to reduce its environmental impact. The company sources wood only from approved harvesters who follow environmental regulations, uses DEP-approved stains and finishes, and recycles all unused wood and sawdust whenever possible.
For families interested in environmentally conscious options, Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions also offers a collection of natural burial caskets approved by the Green Burial Council. These caskets are made from 100% biodegradable materials and are designed specifically for green burial practices.
And if you're wondering, all of their metal caskets are manufactured at their facility in Aurora, Indiana!
Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions is a wonderful company to work with and consistently provides Roupp Funeral Home with quality products and dependable service. After seeing firsthand the craftsmanship, care, and attention to detail that goes into every wooden casket, we have an even greater appreciation for the work they do to support funeral homes and the families we serve.
