Thomas “Tom” E. Downs, 73, of Mifflinburg, entered into rest at 6:40 a.m., Thursday, March 12, 2020, at ManorCare, Sunbury.

He was born June 28, 1946, in Sunbury, a son of the late Francis T. and Martha H. (Turnqueist) Downs.  On February 1, 1969, he married the former Elizabeth “Betty Ann” DiCeglie, who preceded him in death in 2006.

Tom was a 1964 graduate of Sunbury High School.

In 1965, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in Vietnam until he was honorably discharged in 1968.

Tom and his wife, Betty Ann, together owned and operated the Mifflinburg Sub Shop for 42 years.

Tom was a member of St. George Roman Catholic Church, Mifflinburg.

He was a member of the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410 where he served as Commander and District Vice Commander.  Tom was a member of the Mifflinburg VFW Post 1964, Boy Scouts of America, Sunbury Elks Club, Mifflinburg Moose, Knights of Columbus, and served on the Mifflinburg Borough Council.

Tom enjoyed hunting and the outdoors, spending time with his family, and his daily conversations with his friends at the Sub Shop.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Marie and Marcus Renard of Mifflinburg, and Marty Jean and John Lipko of Mifflinburg; four grandchildren, Michael and Erica Renard, and Jordan and Kennedy Lipko; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Janet Downs of Harrisburg; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lorena Downs of Perry Hall, Maryland, Marie “Boo Boo” and Terry Kent of Brentwood, California, Diane and Bob Kuhns of Northumberland, Jean Downs of Mifflinburg, and Kathleen Downs and her fiancé Donald Dziadosz of Mifflinburg; two sisters-in-law, Maria Lieb of Sunbury, and Luann Malsch of Bethlehem; seven nieces and nephews; and 10 great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lou and Jean DiCeglie.

Family and friends are welcome to a time of visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, at the Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg. The Downs family asks that those in attendance should wear masks and social distancing will be in effect.

A graveside service will be on Thursday, June 25, at 12:30 p.m., in the Mifflinburg Cemetery, with military honors accorded by American Legion Post 410 and VFW Post 1964, both of Mifflinburg.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Mifflinburg American Legion Post 410, 320 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, PA 17844, for their youth events.
