Donald Shively

Donald L. Shively, age 94, of Millmont, passed away at Evangelical Hospital, Lewisburg, on July 21st, 2020.

A native of Union County, Donald was born on December 25th,1925, in Millmont, the third of six sons of the late Jacob G.  and Florence R. (Catherman) Shively. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William and Edgar Shively of Millmont, and David Shively of Mechanicsburg.

Donald was a member of the Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren where his grandfather the Reverend Greene Shively had been a revered pastor for many years.

In addition to his loving wife Kathryn Mae Shively of Millmont, he is survived by two sons and one daughter in law, Donald G. Shively and Renda (Sechman) Shively of Millmont and James Greene Christian Shively of Sunbury; two grandchildren, Michael J. Shively of Millmont and Nicholas G. Shively and his wife Lindsay (Thomas) Shively of Lewisburg; three great grandchildren,  Jenna Shively of Millmont, and Connor and Tyler Shively of Lewisburg; two brothers, George Shively of Lewisburg, and Harold Shively of Ohio.

Donald attended Mifflinburg Area High School and graduated on May 29th, 1941 at the age of 16. He worked in his father’s garage until entering the Army on April 3rd, 1944.

During World War II he served with the Army’s 81st Infantry Division and was assigned to various Military Units in the Philippines and during the occupation of Japan from mid-September 1945 until March 1946. In March 1946 he returned to the United States and was honorably discharged on May 2nd, 1946. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal with one battle star, the Combat Medical Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal.

On March 20th, 1953 he married the love of his life, Kathryn Mae Ruhl, who survives. His death ends a loving marital union of 67 years.

In January 1954 he started to work at ACF Industries in Milton working in various departments such as burning and the tool room. He was active in the United Steelworkers of America Union local 1928 as a grievance man/steward for 8 years for various departments such as Dept 102 (tank prep department), blacksmith shop, and pressed steel departments. He also served as both Union President of local 1928 from 1966 to 1970 and Financial Secretary from 1983 to 1984. He was working as a full-time employee of local 1928, United Steelworkers of America, when he retired in June of 1984.

Donald also was elected and served as a school board member for the Mifflinburg Area School District for a period of 18 years from January 1976 thru December 1995 and fought many battles for the rights of the taxpayers.

His interests were carpentry, hunting, fishing, investing, politics, and most of all, family.

Interment will be at the Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Mifflinburg.

A private graveside ceremony will be held at the convenience of the family.
