Shirley M. Katherman

May 1, 1930 — Aug 23, 2026

Shirley M. Katherman, 96, of Laurelton, passed away at 2:59 p.m., Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Celebration Villa of Lewisburg, where she resided for the past 4 years.

She was born May 1, 1930, in Woodward, a daughter of the late Stewart and Lulu (Geiswite) Benner. On April 14, 1951, she married Clair E. Katherman, who preceded her in death 1988.

At the age of 10, Shirley moved to Union County when her father became Forest Ranger. She graduated from Laurelton High School in 1948. This was the last senior class to graduate before the school closed. Shirley was the last surviving member of the class of 1948.

She was employed at Huntington Throwing Mills and the Laurelton Center.

Shirley and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm on Laurel Run, for 35 years, until Clair’s health declined and the farm was sold. They moved to Laurelton and Shirley began employment at Rolling Hills Manor Nursing Home, where she became a Certified Restorative Nursing Assistant. She retired after 23 years of service.

She was a faithful member of the Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church for over 70 years. When her daughter was young, she assisted with the children’s Sunday School. Shirley was involved with the Women’s Group and was always donating food and baked goods for church dinners and other church functions. Friends and family enjoyed her delicious sugar cookies and pies. In her spare time, she was an avid reader.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard Boop of Laurelton; one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Benner of Mifflinburg; and many nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Erma Orndorf; and two brothers, Marvin Benner and Wayne Benner.

A special thank you to the staff at Celebration Villa of Lewisburg and also to Compassus Hospice of Bloomsburg, for her care.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, August 28, at the Hartleton Cemetery, with Pastor Betty Ann Berry, officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 156, Laurelton, PA 17835.

Psalm 23:4,6. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
