Scott M. Basom, 70, Lewisburg

Scott MacDonald Basom, 70, a resident of Riverwoods Independent Community for the past year, formerly of 22 Bogar Lane, Mifflinburg, for 38 years, entered into rest at 6:55 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

He was born March 3, 1944, in Washington, DC, a son of Ruth (Nash) Basom of Lewisburg, and the late Rev. William E. Basom. On April 5, 1975, in Washington, DC, he married the love of his life, the former Linda A. Bartges, who survives.

Scott graduated from McLean High School in Virginia in 1963, and then graduated from Physician's Assistant School in Missouri.

He served four years in the Army as a medic in West Germany.

Scott was employed as a Physician's Assistant at U.S. Penitentiary, Lewisburg, for 28 years. Earlier in life, he worked at Iliff Nursing Home in Virginia.

He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Lewisburg, since 1988.

Scott was a former Boy Scout leader, a regular donor at the American Red Cross, a volunteer for the Mifflinburg Ambulance Association, a lifeguard, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his over 500 hours of volunteer service at the Union County Public Library, Lewisburg.

As a child, Scott spent many summers at the Basom Cottage at Central Oak Heights, West Milton. In his youth, he also spent summers at the Farm and Wilderness Camp in Vermont, first as a camper, then as a counselor, and then as a camp medic.

He survived many physical ailments without complaint. Scott was a loyal husband and loving father. He had a loving heart for people and animals, and was generous with his time, always helping people in need.

Scott loved children, and was the "adopted grandfather" to Griffin, Hallie, and Garrett Egan.

He allowed himself simple pleasures such as collecting santas, comic books, records, and was a voracious reader. Scott recorded books onto audio tape for the enjoyment of his wife's students.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 39 years, and his mother, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Deborah Basom of Lewisburg,Pennsylvania and Aaron and Lillian Basom of Pequea,Pennsylvania; one sister, Kathleen Basom of Boulder, Colorado; one brother, Kenneth Basom of Cedar Falls, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Mariel Hess of Glover, Vermont; 2 nieces and 3 nephews; and many friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by one son, Adam Charles Basom; his father Rev. Willam E.Basom, and one brother, William Nash Basom.

Family and friends are welcome from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, August 23, at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 42 S. 4th St., Lewisburg, where a memorial service to celebrate the life of Scott will be conducted at 2 p.m., with his pastor,Judi A. Herrold, officiating.
