Laura L. Ruckle, 78, Millmont

Laura Lee Ruckle, 78, a resident of Hartley Township for 57 years, died peacefully at 5:44 a.m., Sunday, June 19, 2011, at her home.

She was born in Webb City, Missouri, on April 11, 1933 and moved as an infant with her parents John Warren Merrill and Marian Owens (Eccelston) Merrill to Dunellen, New Jersey. She grew up in Dunellen and attended Dunellen High School, class of 1950. She then majored in Art Education at Douglass College (Rutgers University) class of 1954. In 1953 she joined the Naval Reserve where she met Charles Henry Ruckle, also a Rutgers student. They were married in 1954 and moved to their farm in western Union County near Wiekert, and had four children. Linda (Katherman), Alan, Karen (Ruhl), and Peggy (Duncan). They have 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Laura worked in Occupational Therapy for four years at Laurelton State School before becoming the Elementary, later Middle School art teacher for the Mifflinburg School Districet for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

She was a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader, and Cub Scout Den Mother.

She was a member of the Laurelton Womens Club, and the Nittany Valley Embroiderers Guild of America. She was a charter member of the Susquehanna Doll Club and the Piecemakers Quilt Guild of the Susquehanna Valley. She was for many years a guide at Packwood House Museum in Lewisburg.

She loved to travel and eventually saw all of the places on her "wish list" including Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, China, Australia and New Zealand.

Her interests included all the needle arts, (she began making her own clothes at age 12), painting, designing and making dolls, painting porcelain, and quilting. She preferred making her own designs.

She was an avid collector and shared her collections with others through displays at libraries and museums as well as many programs and talks. Her collections included bells, dolls, colored glass, milkglass, books, swans, fairies, miniature houses, quilts, baskets, everything "Noah" and "The 12 Days of Christmas" She often showed people through her home and the "Doll Museum" built for her by her husband Charles.

Her greatest pleasures were the times spent wtih her family during the 57 years on the farm.

There will be no public services but memorial contributions are welcome in Laura's name to either the Evangelical Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center, or the Evangelical Hospice, 1 Hospital Dr., Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Funeral arrangements are by Roupp Funeral Home, Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Rd., Mifflinburg.
