John Schmitt, 92, Mifflinburg

John Schmitt, 92, of Mifflinburg, passed away peacefully at 3:41 p.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Rolling Hills Manor, Millmont, where he had been a resident since October.

He was born on Russell Street in Vaux Hall, New Jersey, on September 20, 1921, a son of the late Gustave and Kathrine (Smith) Schmitt. He lived in New Market, NJ, and in Florida before residing in Mifflinburg.

In the 1930's, John served with the Civil Conservation Corp.

He was an Army veteran of World War II where he served in Korea.

John was the owner of John Schmitt Aluminum Siding and Roofing in New Jersey. In his many years since retiring, he enjoyed his woodworking and gardening.

Surviving are his children, John Robert of Denver, CO, Andrea Durbin of Elizabeth City, NC, and Pegg Storey of Calabash, NC; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and his siblings, Gus Schmitt of Souderton, and Anne Whitehead of Chatham, NJ. He is also survived by his loving friend, Helen Gessner of Mifflinburg and her family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; one grandson, James Petitt; and by six brothers and sisters.

Funeral services are private. Interment will be in Finn's Point National Cemetery Pennsville, NJ.
