John S. Sauers, 83, Mifflinburg

John Stanley Sauers, 83, of 10665 State Route 304 since 1947, entered into rest at 5:45 a.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg, where he had been a resident for the past six weeks.

He was born October 29, 1925, in West Buffalo Township, a son of the late Ralph S. and Emma (Zimmerman) Sauers. On December 6, 1947, at the Kratzerville Lutheran Church, he married the former Dorothy Kline, who survives.

John was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kratzerville.

Earlier in life, John worked at the Rosedale Dairy, New Berlin. He was then employed at Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, until he retired in 1986.

He served in the Navy from May 1942 until his honorable discharge in May 1946. John was decorated with the Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 stars, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, and Purple Heart, during his tours in Saipan, Tinian, Tarawa, and Iwo Jima.

John was a member of the New Berlin American Legion Post 957, Mifflinburg V.F.W. Post 1964, Mifflinburg Loyal Order of Moose, Middleburg Masonic Lodge # 619, and the Order of the Purple Heart.

He enjoyed woodworking, performing music in his band " The Harmonaires", and fishing.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years, are three sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Sandy Sauers, Roger and Debra Sauers, and Kim and Wendy Sauers, all of Mifflinburg; one daughter, Dena Long of Mifflinburg; 8 grandchildren, Nathan, and Ben Sauers, Melanie Royer, Jeremy Sauers, Kristy, and Jason Long, Katy, and Ryan Sauers; 6 great-grandchildren, Madison, Colin, Morgan, and Tyler Sauers, Colby, and Avery Royer; 2 step-grandchildren, Katy, and Josh Heimbach; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Edith Dietrich, Velma and George Haines, and Alvesta and Speaker Boop; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sandy Sauers, and William and Karlene Sauers.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph D. Sauers; and one sister, Betty Mowery.

Visitors may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Route 204, Kratzerville, where the funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m., with Rev. Breen Sipes, officiating.

Burial will be in the Kratzerville Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, with Military Honors by the New Berlin American Legion Post 957.

A meal will be served at the church following the ceremony.
