LAURELTON - Jeanne Z. Sampsell, 84, of 1656 State Route 235, Laurelton, entered into rest at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Watsontown Health and Rehabilitation.
She was born May 9, 1931, in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Russell and Emily (Bain) Zerbe. On September 2, 1950, in the Northumberland United Methodist Church, she married Carl “Bup” W. Sampsell.
Jeanne was a 1949 graduate of Northumberland High School, and has served as the class secretary since graduation. She was a member of the Northumberland Alumni Association, and attended annual alumni banquets and lunches with her classmates.
She was a member of the Christ’s United Lutheran Church, Millmont, where she served as a Luther League advisor, sang in the choir, helped serve meals at the church and at the West End Fair church stand, taught Sunday School and Bible School, made Easter eggs, was a greeter, and counted money after church.
Jeanne retired from the U.S. Postal Service as the Postmaster of Laurelton. Earlier in life, she was employed at the Laurelton State Village.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine, American Legion Auxiliary, National Association of Postmasters of the United States where she served as chaplain and retired NAPUS chaplain. Jeanne served as President of the 5 County Postmasters, held various positions in the Laurelton’s Women’s Club, charter member of the Union County Historical Society, active in the Hartley Township Community Center Association and helped with their stand at the West End Fair. She was active with the Harley Township Little League with the refreshment stand and as a driver. Past member of the Union County American board in Lewisburg. She volunteered with the Red Cross bloodmobiles and was a regular donor until she was no longer able. She was a scout leader and organizer for the Girl Scouts of America for 50 years.
Jeanne enjoyed traveling, attending Postmaster conventions, spending time with family, collecting stamps and driving elderly friends and neighbors to appointments.
Jeanne was the oldest of 11 children and raised her brother, Larry, after their parents passed away.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 65 years, are one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Kevin Valentine of Watsontown; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven D. and Diane Sampsell of Laurelton; Five grandchildren, Scott Valentine, Carla Snook, Jonica Sampsell, Katie Sampsell and Jenelle Spickler; two step grandchildren, Landra Hopkins and Richie Wright; 11 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Nancy Zerbe of Silver Spring, Maryland, Edward and Caroline Zerbe of Sunbury, Donald “Larry” and Gayle Zerbe of Laurelton, and Scott and Vickie Zerbe of California; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Barbara Dunn of Muncy, and Rebecca Ann and Norman Wenrick of Aaronsburg; and one sister-in-law, Ramona Zerbe of Selinsgrove.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Jr., Jack, and Carey Lee; and one sister, Emily Joyce Lupold.
Family and friends are welcome from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 12-1:00 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a funeral at 1 at the Christ's United Lutheran Church, the four bells church, 13765 Old Turnpike Road, Millmont with Rev. John D. Yost, officiating.
Burial will be in the Hartleton Cemetery.
