George C. Knauer, 83, of Milton, entered into rest on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Gatehouse Hospice, Williamsport.
He was born March 1, 1942 in Sunbury, a son of the late George J. Knauer and Mary Theresa Knauer (nee McDermott) of Danville. He was a graduate of Danville Senior High School, class of 1960. He was first employed by Weis Markets in Danville, and worked for Red Savage and Guy Foust at Midway Bowling Lanes in the late 50's and early 60's.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He spent 4 years in the service, learning communication electronics and seeing the world. After his honorable discharge in 1965, he accepted an electronics position with the Department of Defense in Ft. Meade, Md. This eventually led him to employment with the National Security Agency, also at Ft. Meade, Md. George spent the next 41 years with the government in various management positions there. He retired in 2006 as an Electronics Engineer. George was very protective and secretive of his work, as he always told us that he could never discuss anything about his work. In 2002, he received the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award
George was the oldest of 15 children. He always found time to visit his parents and siblings several times a year. Whenever he came home, it was like a holiday. His younger siblings were very important to him and always was willing to share stories of his daily life growing up in a very large catholic family. George loved when his family visited him in Washington D.C., and always had an itinerary ready to show them around.
George was a very successful amateur bowler during high school and during service time, having won several tournaments, trophies and awards. In his leisure time, he enjoyed studying and reading various technical, science, communication, radio, and microwave books.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by an uncle, Reverend Charles A. McDermott; brother, Edward Knauer; nephews Brian Stanley and Aaron Beyer; and brother-in-law, Harold Stump.
Surviving are eight sisters, Joan Stump, Elaine Diehl, Theresa Woodruff (Byard), Monica Beyer (Rocky), all of Danville, Donna Stanley (James) of Elysburg, Mary West, (Donald) of Riverside, Karen Suchecki (Dan) of Harleysville, and Gladys Howlett (Joe) of Dauphin; five brothers, Charles Knauer, William Knauer (Connie) of Danville, Joseph Knauer (Beth) of Northumberland, Michael Knauer of Milton, and Steve Knauer (Brenda) of Bellefonte; 30 nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
Family and friends are welcome from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 68 Center Street, Danville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11, with Father Timothy Marcoe, celebrant.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Danville.
