MIFFLINBURG a�" Eugene L. "Gene" Sawyer, 83, of 195 Scottsdale Drive, formerly of Bentley Creek, Pa., and Melbourne, Fla., passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010.

He was born March 18, 1927, in Bodines, a son of the late Harry Clayton and Lenna (Condon) Sawyer. Gene was married to the former Laura Jeannette "Jeannie" Comfort, who survives. They were married on July 31, 1948, in Southport.

After attending Canton High School, Gene served honorably in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Winooskie.

He was employed by Remington Rand before starting his career as a third-generation family member with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He also worked for Dalrymple Construction Co. before moving to Melbourne, where he retired from the Brevard County Department of Roads and Bridges.

He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, where he served as a volunteer for Group Workcamps and supported the missions program. Gene was active in the Ridgebury Volunteer Fire Company, Bentley Creek, and served as a Boy Scout leader, a Little League umpire and as a justice of the peace.

Gene will be remembered for being able to fix or repair anything, enjoying swimming, hunting, fishing, wrestling and bowling, eyeing up the corner pieces of the cakes and brownies, hiding candy from Jeannie and snuggling with his dogs, Heidi and Holly.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, Gene is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kimberley Sawyer, of Mifflinburg; five grandchildren and their spouses, Nikoya and Bret Reiswig, of Freeport, Fla., Michelle and Mark Tovey, of Sunbury, Russell and Jennifer Sawyer and Joshua Sawyer, all of Mifflinburg, and Nicole and Clayton Gessner, of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Scotty Reiswig, Alexis Sawyer and Keaton and Kylee Tovey; three sisters-in-law, Helen Sawyer and Elsie Grover, both of Elmira, N.Y., and Roberta Riggan, of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Glenn Merrill Sawyer; one brother, Robert "Bob" Sawyer; and one sister, Dorothy Sarro.

A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg, followed by a memorial service to celebrate Gene's life at 11 with the Rev. James Rill officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gene's memory to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg, PA 17844, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Roupp Funeral Home Inc., 8594 Old Turnpike Road. Mifflinburg.
