Dale “Pap” Smith, 86, of Plum St., New Berlin, entered into rest at 2:36 a.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Rolling Hills Manor, Millmont.
He was born April 19, 1939, in New Berlin, a son of the late Irvin and Florence (Knouse) Smith. On September 25, 1965, in Mazeppa, he married the former Dorothy Blyler, who preceded him in death in 1984.
Pap was a 1957 graduate of Mifflinburg High School.
He was a member of the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, New Berlin, where he formerly served on the consistory.
Pap was employed as a plasterer at Irvin E. and Marvin L. Smith Construction, New Berlin, and later was employed in the maintenance department at Mifflinburg Area School District, from where he retired.
He was a life member of the New Berlin Fire Company where he enjoyed helping with fundraisers until his health prevented it recently.
He was also a member of the Mifflinburg Moose, Sons of the American Legion, New Berlin, and a charter member of the Susquehanna Valley Penn State Club.
Pap enjoyed attending Penn State football games, especially tailgating with friends. Aside from his grandchildren, his greatest joy came from spending time with friends and family at his cabin where he made sure everyone had enough to eat.
Surviving is one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Kimberly Smith of New Berlin; two grandchildren, Emily Smith of Spokane, Washington, and Margaret and her husband Matthew Brouse of New Berlin; and one great-granddaughter, Mera Brouse.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Franklin, Marvin and Jay Smith; and one sister, Donna “Suz” Misavage.
Family and friends are welcome to a time of visitation from 11 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, November 25, at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 326 Market Street, New Berlin, where the memorial service will be conducted at noon, with Rev. James Cope, Pastor Jan Garinger, and Rev. Alice Rauch, officiating. The service will be followed by a time of fellowship and refreshments.
Burial will be conducted privately in New Berlin Cemetery.
