Carol M. Sumner, of Bellefonte, PA and Mifflinburg, PA, was called home to be with the Lord on August 14, 2020 after a long-fought second battle with cancer. She previously beat and survived Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the 1980’s.
Family and close friends will conduct a private burial service following strict COVID-19 precautions. A public celebration of life memorial service will be held in Mifflinburg, PA, to be announced at a later date.
She was born on January 3, 1957 in Kelly Township, Union County PA, a daughter of the late Donald K. and Yvonne I. (Kinsman) Sumner. She was preceded in death by her younger brother David A. Sumner of Silver Spring, MD, and by her beloved Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles.
Carol was a graduate of Mifflinburg High School class of 1975, received her LPN after graduating from Phillipsburg Nursing School in 1978. She then earned her RN license shortly after completing her BSN degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Carol was a Certified Developmental Disability Nurse with active professional memberships in the National DDNA and State PDDNN. Since 2001, her employer was Geisinger Central PA Health Care Quality Unit (HCQU). She absolutely loved her job and spent the majority of her compassionate career serving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Prior to HCQU, she worked throughout central PA as a regional field nurse at Arc of Centre County, and before that, at Centre Home Care. Early in her career, she served in the ER, ICU, Recovery Room and other hospital capacities at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, PA and at the GWU Hospital in DC.
Carol was a life-long, dedicated Penn State Football fan, lover of cats, and a staunch conservative.
Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Lisa Sumner of Silver Spring, MD; her sister-in-law Dalia Sumner of Rockville, MD; four nephews, Brian Sumner of Silver Spring, MD, Eric Sumner of Tel Aviv, Israel, Patrick Sumner and his fiancé Jacklyn Trushcheff of Madison, WI, and Adam Sumner of Rockville, MD; her Aunt Shirley Kinsman, Cousins Virginia Seely, Hart Seely, Nancy Riley, Tami Hogan, Lori Klopfer, Jodi Trevino, Pam Haseltine, Pat Weitz, Glen, Kim and Penny Kinsman and Peral Simonis.
